The pandemic has developed an interest in sweetness in the population confined to the spring of 2020, is in essence the results of the study conducted by the team of Kristina Gligoric of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, published February 28 in the journal Nature Communications. How did they come to this conclusion? Thanks to Google Trends data!
Through the requests that Internet users have made on the most used search engine in the world, Google, the researchers were able to determine by collecting data from the tool of the American firm, Google Trends, that the centers of interest of the populations in confinement in the spring of the year 2020 have rapidly and strongly evolved, to focus preferably on sweet foods!
Digital: a valuable contribution to public health epidemiology
“A lot of work is now adopting these digital tools that complement, not replace, epidemiological studies conducted in the field. There is still work to be done to refine the signals measured and to understand how they can be used as public health indicators”, foresees Arnaud Chiolero for Le Temps (March 2, 2022).
