In the headlines: The news spread like wildfire: A 3D-printed capsule, destined for use in assisted suicide, hopes to operate in Switzerland, reported media around the globe this week.
The suicide pod, called “Sarco”, is the creation of Dr Philip Nitschke who serves as the director of the non-profit organisation Exit International (no connection to Exit).
According to Watson.ch, Philip Nitschke’s claims that he was in talks with several groups in Switzerland to launch the Sarco capsule next year could not be verified. None of the main Swiss assisted suicide organisations – Dignitas, Exit Deutsche Schweiz, or Ex International – said they were considering the technology.
In terms of content and form, the system devised by the Australian doctor raises many questions and will continue to attract the attention of publishers and readers alike.
