In the headlines: While the recent publication of the work of researchers from Lausanne (CHUV-EPFL) on the identification of a type of neuron that allows patients to walk again is making a lot of noise, a real hemorrhage of grey matter is taking place in Switzerland.
With the start of Horizon Europe without Switzerland, research is suffering a more than substantial loss. Some facts, not exhaustive, demonstrate this (from the article published in Bilan):
- No less than 3.048 billion euros have been allocated by the EU in six years to research and innovation in Switzerland, in the framework of Horizon 2020.
- A key role for Switzerland in certain cutting-edge technologies, since 1418 projects are coordinated here
- Switzerland ranks 2nd in terms of quality
Transitional measures to compensate have been unveiled. To date a plan of 20 million, we are far from the 3 billion of Horizon 2022… In May 2022, the Federal Council decided to take two complementary measures: the promotion of bilateral and multilateral research cooperation and the launch of a national Quantum initiative.
The attractiveness of Switzerland is at stake! A simple financial compensation will not heal this exodus. So what can be done to overcome this lack of network?
